"Ensuring Work Family Balance"</b></p>
<p>Each year the International Day of Families is celebrated on 15th of May.
The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of
issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social,
economic and demographic processes affecting families.</p>
<p>The theme for 2012 has been chosen is:<br />
<b>"Ensuring Work Family Balance"</b></p>
<p>Several socio-economic and demographic trends lead to significant changes in
family and work life. Due to several developments, i.e., new life styles and job
requirements, the household size has decreased in the last decade of years
while the geographical distance between family members increased.</p>

      <p>On Thursday 8 March 2012,   7:30pm to 8:30pm Eastern Standard Time   Canada, Fumiyo Kagawa and David Selby will present a Webinar in the   much-heralded Winter 2011-2012 <em>Green Teacher</em> Webinar   Series.</p>
    
    
      <p>Building on their Fall 2011   article in <em>Green Teacher</em>, Fumiyo Kagawa and David Selby will   critique mainstream manifestations of climate change education as a shallow and   insufficient response to the global and human condition.   They will offer   an elaboration of a 'deep climate change education' that examines values issues,   explores the dynamics of climate change avoidance and denial, investigates the   complicity of economic growth in fomenting climate change while cultivating   intimacy with nature, an ethic of denizenship, and commitment to global climate   justice.  The links between climate change education, sustainability   education and disaster risk reduction education will be explored, the whole   being exemplified through practical activities.  The event is for both both   formal and non-formal youth educators.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>On         May 26-27, 2011, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) and the         Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) held a         conference on financial literacy in Toronto, Canada. The conference drew         some 400 experts and practitioners from around the         world.</p>
<p>The         conference participants came together and discussed:</p>

  <li>national           financial literacy strategies and surveys on financial           literacy </li>
  <li>steps to           address financial literacy gaps in credit and debt management,           retirement planning and technological innovation </li>
  <li>evaluation           of financial education programs </li>

  <li>capacity           building and train-the-trainer programs </li>
  <li>financial           education in the school system </li>
  <li>gender           and financial education </li>

BoHS members have worked diligently to plan   one of the most exciting and relevant programs in many years. Outstanding   speakers will inform and inspire members and their guests. We begin on   Wednesday, March 7 at 11:00 a.m. with the opening session of the Youth Obesity   Prevention Summit and conclude on Friday at 12:00 noon. <p>The conference will be hosted at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, near Washington   National Airport. There is complimentary van transportation to and from the   hotel and it is located near a Metro station so transportation is convenient and   inexpensive. </p>

<p>Each year, America's high schools graduate thousands of young   adults who are unprepared in matters of employment and financial   decisions.&nbsp; Nationwide Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences   and 4-H Youth Development educators have written and are delivering a   results-oriented program known as <strong><em>Reality Store</em></strong> or <strong><em>Real   Money, Real World.&nbsp; </em></strong>These personal financial curricula simulate   real-life experiences to help youth become aware of the money management skills   they need. &nbsp;All programs are designed to be a partnership between the   county Cooperative Extension Office, the   school, and the business community. </p>

It is paramount that higher education programs in home economics remain ever vigilant
regrading how they are designed because they socialise individuals into the profession, and
deeply affect the formation of home economics professional identities, how people see
themselves as a home economist and identify with the profession. This paper discusses the link
between higher education home economics programs and future-proofing the profession through
a well-thought out pre professional socialisation process. Well-planned socialisation processes
better ensure a commitment to the home economics professional culture and community, and to
deeply entrenched alignment with a positive home economics identity.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>2012 THEME: THE GEOGRAPHY OF SUSTAINABILITY GUEST EDITOR: FAUSTO O. SARMIENTO, Ph.D. </p>
<p>As the 21st century develops, so, too our understanding and application of sustainability concepts will emerge and mature. We must confront the realities of a world where multiple regions and cultures dominate as we forge ahead through the decades in which human population will reach its peak and the production of carbon-based energy will decline. Crucial to the development of this new paradigm for sustainability will be a cross-cultural and multi-regional framework in which geography, with its inherent incorporation of the cultural and the physical, from the micro- to the meta-level, must play a central role. In this spirit, we solicit scholarly and punctual contributions on the theme of &ldquo;the geography of sustainability.&rdquo; Preference will be given to authors who address the emerging binaries that guide our understanding and education about sustainability: North versus South; Natural versus Cultural; Carbon-based versus Electron-based; Urban versus Rural; Traditional versus Modern. JSE emphasizes how we teach and learn about these important topics in formal, as well as informal settings at all stages of life. For details on prospective manuscripts, please contact Fausto O.     <title>Aging in place offers options for aging population and for careers</title>

        <![CDATA[ <p>FOR IMMEDIATE   RELEASE</p>
  <p><strong>Aging   in place offers options for aging population and for   careers</strong></p>
  <p>Greenville,   NC (Sept. 30, 2011)--By the year 2050, the number of Americans living to be 85   years of age or older will have increased fivefold. As the population ages,   there could be a serious shortage of services and lack of equal access for aging   adults who need care. In North Carolina, for example, 43% of the existing   continuing care retirement centers are concentrated in 7 of the state's 100   counties.</p>
  <p>In   the article "Innovative and Complementary Approaches to Aging in Place"   published in the most recent issue of the<em> Journal of Family and Consumer   Sciences,</em> researchers at East Carolina University and North Carolina State   University say that older adults' preferences combined with limited private and   public resources indicate that aging in place (i.e., remaining at home rather   than moving to a long-term care facility) may be the best way to meet the needs   of an aging population.</p>

        <![CDATA[ <p>Authors   Sharon Ballard, Carol Jenkins, N.&nbsp;Yaprak Savut, Hunt McKinnon, Sylvia   Escott-Stump, and Katherine Carroll discuss the need for options that promote   aging in place as a viable choice. As experts in a variety of academic areas,   the authors call for a holistic or "ecosystem" approach to care management in   helping older adults remain in their homes. The approach includes modifications   to living spaces, safe and healthy eating, and even innovative clothing   design.</p>
  <p>The authors cite a   growing need for care management professionals who possess a broad range of   knowledge in human growth and development, housing and design, nutrition and   exercise, clothing, family resources management, and family dynamics. These   skill sets are a good fit for family and consumer sciences professionals and   professionals in the family life education field. The authors call for greater   visibility of these professions and their certifications relative to the field   of gerontology.</p>
  <p>Sharon Ballard   said, "There are both health and financial benefits in having older adults age   in their own homes. Family and consumer sciences professionals and family life   educators have the right education to take the lead in a movement toward   successful aging in place. Educational institutions, including our own, need to   be sure they are telling people about these professions and the opportunities   they provide."</p>
