Doris Renwick Badir. born January 18, 1924. BSC (HEc) University of Manitoba (1945); MS Ed Syracuse University (1953);
MSc (Econ) London School of Economics (1963). Died gracefully at home on June 7th in her 88th year, after a long
struggle with Progressive Supra Neural Palsy. Dearly missed by her devoted husband and loving care-taker, Magdy;
her daughter, Patricia, son-in-law Erik and granddaughter, Lucie; her brothers Jack and Gordon and sisters-in-law
Bette and Laura; her nieces and nephews, Wendy, Shelley, David, Marjorie, Michael, Kristiane, Mickey, Alice, Magdy
and Mira; the Kierens and the Morras as well as her many friends and colleagues. Doris became professor at the Macdonald
Institute of Home Economics at Guelph University in 1953. Travelled, in 1963, to Egypt to advise the UN on the development
of a training program in rural home economics. Met and married Magdy in 1964. Returned to Canada in 1965 to take
up a teaching position at the University of Waterloo. Moved to Edmonton in 1967 where she served as professor and
then dean of Home Economics at the University of Alberta until 1986 when she became special assistant to the president
on employment equity until her retirement in 1990. Was president of the Canadian Home Economics Association from
1976 to 1978 and president of the International Federation for Home Economics from 1988 to 1992 and in this position,
she helped to influence the United Nations to declare 1994 the International Year of the Family. She received many
awards and honors including the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa from the University of Alberta in 1994 and
the University of Manitoba in 2005 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, from the University of
Helsinki in 1997. Doris was a wise, noble woman who will be remembered, not only in Canada but in many countries
in the developing world, as a tireless feminist and an articulate advocate for children - particularly those living
in poverty. She will be remembered at home as loving and committed sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Memorial Service Tuesday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Westlawn Chapel, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton, AB. Donations,
in lieu of flowers, to the Doris Badir Graduate Research Fellowship in Human Ecology at the University of Alberta.

Doris Badir, Edmonton, Alberta, President of the Canadian Home Economics Association from 1976
to 1978, a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Home Economics Foundation from 1980 to 1987, and
President of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) from 1988 to 1992, was honoured with an Honourary
Doctor of Laws from the University of Manitoba on June 2, 2005, to recognize her sixty years of exceptional service
as an educator, international home economics
consultant, administrator, and professional leader. Her contributions have been in the cause of
alleviating poverty, strengthening families and caring for children, not only in Canada, but in many
countries in the developing world.
